While a bilingual child’s vocabulary in each individual language may be smaller than average, his total vocabulary (from both languages) will be at least the same size as a monolingual child (10, 15). Bilingual children may say their first words slightly later than monolingual children, but still within the normal age range (between 8-15 months) (11). 아이가 같은 문장이나 대화를 할때 두개 언어를 섞어 쓴다면 이것은 일종의 Code-mixing 현상 입니다.

예를 들어 '마이 홈으로 갈꺼야' , '애플 먹을래' 등이 있습니다.

부모님들은 간혹 이러한 현상에 대해서 걱정을 하기도 하지만 이러한 현상은 2개 국어 상용자에게 나타나는 당연한 현상 입니다.

2개 국어가 능숙하게 된후에는 이러한 현상이 자동적으로 없어집니다.

많은 연구자들은 Code-mixing현상을 좋은 징조라고 봅니다.

예를 들어 한국어랑 영어를 상용해서 쓰는 아이가 영어만 쓰는 사람을 만난다면, 판단하에 그사람과는 영어를 쓸것이고, 만약 한국어를 쓰는 사람을 만난다면 판단하에 한국어만을 쓸것입니다.

따라서 2개 국어 습득자에게 있어서는 Code-mixing현상은 당연한 현상 입니다.
